Description
Inheritance
Reduced is a sex-linked recessive mutation. This means that both parents need to carry the mutant gene for it to express in a cock the next generation, but only the father needs to carry it for the gene to express in a hen. As a sex-linked recessive mutation, it is possible for this mutation to be carried by cock bird who does not visually express it, but any hen who carries the gene will show it.
Alleles
Apart from wild type, the other allele at the r locus is rubella.
History
Reduced was discovered in American roller pigeons by a young boy in the 1950s. He showed the odd-coloured pigeon to Carl Graefe who identified it us a previously unknown gene and investigated.
