Re: The cr locus - Peak crest
Overall, the presence or absence of crest in pigeons is influenced by the Crest gene located at the cr locus.
It is generally agreed that the cr gene is recessive to the wild type (no crest), and when present in homozygous dose, it acts like the "Switch On" trigger for crest formation.
However, the type of crest expressed in the phenotype (visual appearance) is influenced by many modifiers, giving rise to the Peak Crest, the Shell Crest, the Hood&Mane Crest, the Rose Crest, etc.
The various types of crests, and their genetic and visual expressions are very well summarised in this article (with photos of specimens and species)

(highly recommended if you are interested in crest genetics for backyard breeding purposes)

Re: The cr locus - Peak crest
One thing I'd like to be able to test if I can ever get my hands on one is the crest of the Abu Abse/Syrian Tarbesh. Anecdotally I've heard it is an allele of cr, but I've never seen any empirical data.

Yes, I'm a member of two racing clubs and one exhibition club (but I only race, I don't exhibit my birds).Lotus wrote: ↑Sun Feb 25, 2024 7:45 pmHi Adam,AdamArcher wrote: ↑Sat Nov 14, 2020 9:00 pm Wiki link - https://www.pigeongenetics.com/wiki/ind ... e_cr_locus
