American Show Racers

Post by blackbun »

A new breed for me as I’ve always worked with tipplers. ASRs are an incredible bird. I was first attracted to that handsome head out line and big, bulky bulldog like physique but would say that everything really is bigger and better particularly their temperament. Incredibly confident and trusting they always come to me when I’m in the shed and you have to watch where you put your feet as they literally need pushing out of the way.
Big issue though is in getting fertile eggs. I understand this is to do with their short bodies, short legs and ample vent feathering. To improve chances of fertile eggs I’ve been advised to trim vent feathers of both birds and, interestingly, cut an inch off the end of the tail feathers. I didn’t do that this year…managed to breed one youngster…something about leading a horse to water!

Congrats on the young one! Unfortunately fertility in some of the homer derived show breeds isn't great 😥

That’s a helpful comment Adam. Reassuring actually.
