I think typically new genes or phenotypes are discovered by people who do understand the significance. People who aren't into colours usually ignore or misidentify them. I use a ToPigeon and have found it less reliable than the more expensive brands, however, when a single pigeon is crossing it very rarely misses. There are a few different bronzing factors and I'm terrible at identifying them, so I won't give you a wrong answer.

But new mutations have been found in ferals in the past, it's always worth looking at them 🙂

I'd agree that it is "neutral" and would only worry if it was inhibiting the bird walking etc.
