People have been keeping pigeons for millennia, and in some parts of the world the pigeons kept by local people are well documented, sometimes with centuries of detailed written history kept. In other parts of the world, for example parts of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, pigeons are widely kept but knowledge about the kinds of birds kept is virtually extinct outside of their home regions.
The aim of the Indigenous Breeds Project is to collect and protect information about these pigeons, and share it with fanciers world wide, to prevent knowledge being lost, and to preserve the oral histories of these birds in writing.
