Tortoiseshell Grizzles

Post by Nomad »

When mating tortoiseshell grizzled pigeons; if you make two do you get another or do they get the stork pattern (more white) like other grizzles?

They become more white. Tort isn't a distinct gene, it is a phenotype created by the regular classic grizzle gene with the addition of a bronzing factor.

Thanks Adam. I thought that might be the case but the dad is has a lot of brown / bronze color so wasn’t sure. Baby looks white but definitely has brown coming in.

Remember only the homozygous grizzles will be whiter, you'll still get plenty of heterozygous grizzles which are probably what you want.

Thanks again. I plan to breed the squab back to dad if it’s a hen to see what that produces. Took me a bit to find out why these grizzled were brown before I was able to locate the literature regarding the bronzing factor.

Thanks again
