If I ever have to move a single egg into an established nest I try to use a nest that I know will produce different coloured young so I should be able to tell when they feather up.

Remember only the homozygous grizzles will be whiter, you'll still get plenty of heterozygous grizzles which are probably what you want.

They become more white. Tort isn't a distinct gene, it is a phenotype created by the regular classic grizzle gene with the addition of a bronzing factor.

It can be notoriously difficult sometimes to tell spread classic grizzles and spread tiger grizzles apart. I don't believe it has ever been "proven" that classic and tiger are alleles, but the general consensus is they are. If that is true, then yes it would be possible for a pigeon to car...
